Built to disappear into the architecture
J Geiger builds precision motorized shading systems for projects where the hardware is not supposed to be part of the design conversation. Much of the specification work is about concealment — keeping the hardware out of sight so the room reads as architecture, not equipment.
That makes it a different specification from a standard motorized roller. It rewards early involvement, because the pocket, the power and the structural backing usually have to be resolved while the ceiling is still on paper.
Why it has to be specified early
The most common way a J Geiger installation goes wrong is not a hardware problem, it is a sequencing problem. Recessed pockets, power routing and blocking are all decided long before shades are ordered, and a pocket sized for a generic roller rarely accommodates a concealed system cleanly once lining or a dual-roller condition is added.
The fix is to bring the shade specification into the drawings before the openings are framed, so the pocket dimensions, power locations and structural backing match the system that will actually be installed. On a retrofit, survey the existing condition first to confirm where a concealed system is and is not achievable — which is more useful to a designer than discovering it at installation.
Integration with lighting control
On a project that also runs a lighting control system, it pays to plan the shades and the lighting together rather than one after the other. CMI provides Lutron lighting control alongside motorized shading, so daylight and electric light can be planned as one system.
On an integrated project, that means one team for the shading and the lighting control rather than splitting the work between a shade supplier and a separate integrator.
Specifying J Geiger through CMI
CMI has served the tri-state design and build community — New Jersey, New York and Connecticut — since 1993, working wholesale to the trade as well as directly with homeowners. For J Geiger projects, CMI handles the work from product selection through measurement and professional installation, with Lutron lighting control available where the project needs it.
