Maplewood is a suburban township in Essex County, NJ with an approximate population of 24,847 residents. It was originally formed as South Orange Township in 1861. The name of the township was formally changed to Maplewood in 1922. The name is from a railroad station built in 1838 by a land speculator by the name of John Shedden which he called Maplewood.
