About New Providence NJ
New Providence is a borough located in Union County, NJ. As of the 2023 census, it has an approximate population of 13,488 residents. In 1664, New Providence was part of the “Elizabethtown Tract,” and its first European settlers were part of a Puritan colony established in 1720 called “Turkey” or “Turkey Town” because of wild turkeys in the area. In 1809, New Providence Township was formed, which included New Providence, Berkeley Heights, and Summit. In 1899, New Providence withdrew from New Providence Township and was reincorporated as a borough. New Providence is bordered by the Union County municipalities of Berkeley Heights and Summit.
