About Smithtown NY
Smithtown is a town on the North Shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, NY. It has a population of approximately 116,384 people. Smithtown was originally called “Smithfield” and was first settled around 1665. There is a local legend regarding the town’s name. It is said that after rescuing a Native American chief’s daughter from abduction, the chief said Richard Smith would be granted title to all the land he could encircle in one day “on a bull”. Smith chose to ride the bull on the longest day of the year (summer solstice) allowing him to ride longer and encircle more land. The land he acquired in this way roughly approximates what is now Smithtown. The town was most likely named after Richard Smith. Smithtown is bordered by other Suffolk County towns – on the northeast by St. James, on the northwest by King’s Park, and Hauppauge to the south.
